Biography
Maria do Céu completed her music studies at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) after training with Turíbio Santos, then entered Santos’ Orquestra de Violões do Rio de Janeiro (Guitar Orchestra) in 1984. Through membership in Santos’ Quinteto Clássico she appeared at the opening of the Free Jazz Festival of São Paulo in 1986. She next took part in Água de Vintém in 1989, performing pieces by Chiquinha Gonzaga for a tribute honoring the composer, conductor, and pianist. In 2000 do Céu issued her first solo CD containing works by Francisco Soares de Souza that resulted from her own research. She has also appeared with the Samburá Trio alongside Juliano Barbosa on bassoon and Di Lutgardes on percussion.
