Biography
Acclaimed as one of the finest interpreters of Mozart, the Portuguese pianist Maria-João Pires unites meticulous stylistic refinement with a profound commitment to exploring the intellectual intricacies and spiritual essence of music. She deliberately sidesteps the conventional persona of the touring virtuoso, instead highlighting music’s spiritual core and probing for deeper significances that analytical approaches might miss. For her the composer and the performer serve alike as channels for a force beyond the ordinary; yet even while regarding the score with reverence she remains keenly attentive to its architectural design, discerning clarity within its most elaborate constructions. In her readings of the Romantic repertoire, especially the works of Chopin and Schumann, she unites an intense personal engagement with a precise grasp of each composition’s internal coherence. Critics have noted that her tone, reflecting an exceptionally broad emotional palette, moves through an astonishing spectrum of dynamics—from the faintest whisper of sound to powerful, monumental resonance—while preserving a wealth of intermediate shadings. Equally distinctive is her rare capacity to perceive and communicate the exact sequence of inner impulses that animate any given musical work.
She began to play at the age of three and made her first public appearance two years afterward. At seven she performed Mozart concertos, and at nine she received Portugal’s highest musical award. At the Lisbon Conservatory she trained under Campos Coelho and Francine Benoit, completing her studies at sixteen. Advanced training took her to Germany, where she worked with Rösl Schmidt in Munich and Karl Engel in Hanover. In 1970 she claimed first prize at the Beethoven Bicentennial Competition in Brussels. Her London debut followed in 1986, and three years later she appeared for the first time in New York. Since then she has appeared with leading orchestras on both sides of the Atlantic, among them the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, and the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist since 1989, she has issued numerous widely praised recordings, including a Bach recital, Chopin’s Nocturnes, Schubert’s Impromptus, and two Mozart concertos conducted by Claudio Abbado. Her complete set of Mozart sonatas earned the Grand Prix du Disque in 1990. From 1989 onward she has devoted considerable attention to chamber music, traveling throughout Europe and the Far East with violinist Augustin Dumay. In 1998 she formed a trio with Dumay and cellist Jian Wang; the ensemble toured the Far East that year and performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto at several European venues in 1999. In 2000 she withdrew from the stage for several months to focus on educational initiatives in Portugal. Early in the following decade a number of retrospective collections appeared, among them Artist Portrait: Maria-João Pires. She resumed recording by 2005, releasing a disc of Schubert duets with Ricardo Castro, and in 2008 she issued a new two-disc survey of Chopin’s music.
