Marianne Flemming entered the world and spent her childhood in Florida beneath bright skies. At age nine she took up piano and guitar lessons, motivated by her father’s work as a nightclub singer. By eighteen she was already appearing in neighborhood bars and winning over listeners with her performances. Later she enrolled at the University of South Florida, completing coursework in Music Composition and Theater before receiving her BA in the latter field. After gigs that took her across Europe and into Venezuela, she produced her earliest recording, a cassette, in 1992. Her first album, released independently in 1995 under the title 111 Chords & A Bridge, contained the songs “I Could Never Be a Stranger,” “Main Squeeze,” and “Watching History Repeat.” In 1999 she issued Venetian Dream, which introduced listeners to “Where Dreams Come True,” “Limbo,” and “Evil Disposition.” The following year brought Joy Ride, an album she had originally tracked on cassette back in 1996. Between studio sessions she continues to play clubs and coffeehouses and occasionally joins a jazz duo on stage. Over the years she has shared bills or collaborated with Carrie Newcomer, Magda Hiller, Rory Block, Leon Russell, Bo Diddley, Southern Culture on the Skids, Peter Mulvey, and additional artists. Her sound blends rock, jazz, reggae, blues, and folk, an eclectic mix that reflects the range of places she has performed.
