Biography
A skilled performer on the classical piano who also sings jazz and teaches, Marina Pacowski has earned recognition for her expressive, acoustic approach rooted in post-bop, scat, and classic standards. After establishing a strong reputation for classical recitals and instruction across Europe, she shifted her focus to jazz vocals once based in Los Angeles and introduced her work to the public through the 2023 release Inner Urge.
Pacowski entered the world in France and spent her childhood in Biarritz amid an artistic household that placed her at the piano early on. Jazz entered her listening habits, yet her training centered on classical repertoire throughout her youth. She distinguished herself with multiple honors, among them victory in the Coaching Singers Directory division of Vienna’s Hans Gabor Belvedere International Competition, plus top prizes from the conservatories of Bayonne, Bordeaux, and Rueil-Malmaison in Paris. She combined concert work with teaching by joining the faculty at the Conservatory Maurice Ravel. The International Society of Bassists presented her with its Best Collaborative Music Award in 2017. That distinction drew the notice of bassist and composer Frank Proto, who composed the Concerto for Piano and String Orchestra expressly for her; the two recorded the piece in 2018.
Near that period she relocated to the United States and eventually made her home in Los Angeles, where she chose to concentrate on jazz singing. Her first album under her own name appeared in 2023 as Inner Urge, an acoustic collection of jazz standards that includes performances by pianist Josh Nelson, bassist John Clayton, drummer Ron McCurdy, trumpeter Carl Saunders, saxophonist Joel Frahm, and additional musicians.
