Known as a Brazilian bossa nova vocalist and lyricist, Mario Telles is the brother of Sylvia Telles, an early bossa singer whose life ended in a car accident in 1966. Far less productive than his sibling, he has issued only one LP to date, the widely influential self-titled Mario Telles, cut in the 1960s and containing beautiful and impressive arrangements by Moacir Santos, Baden Powell, and Astor Silva. That release introduced the bossa nova standard “Nana,” derived from Santos’ composition “Cosia No. 5” after Telles supplied new lyrics. He remains an active performer in Brazil and has guested on various recordings, yet he has not extended his solo catalog. Rev-Ola reissued the lone album on CD under its original title in 2007.
