Bauer pursued her studies in Portland, OR, as well as in Paris and Berlin, with Boulanger and Rothwell among her instructors. New York University and the Juilliard School numbered among the institutions where she held teaching posts, along with several others. Regular lectures at Chautauqua formed part of her activities, reflecting her strong advocacy for American music. She helped establish the American Music Guild while also serving on the board of the League of American Composers. Contributions to music journals flowed regularly from her pen, and she held the post of New York editor for the Musical Leader. Impressionistic qualities paired with a firm structural foundation characterized her compositions. Her publications encompass the volume Twentieth Century Music (New York, rev. 2/1947).
