Though raised in Manhattan amid classical music by his mother, Tony-winning Broadway costume designer Mary Percy Schenck, flatpicking guitarist Mark Cosgrove discovered bluegrass while still young. After a brief interest in drums, he developed rapid command of the guitar. Both the U.S. National Flatpicking Guitar Championship in Winfield, KS, and the Doc Watson Guitar Championship in Wilkesboro, NC, became his. His earliest recordings appeared with the Philadelphia-based bluegrass ensemble the Lewis Brothers. Extensive session work followed, most prominently alongside Jerry Douglas. Good Medicine marked his debut album in 1994, after which came Round Island and then, in 2005, Sweet Reason—his first release for FGM Records, the label of Flatpicking Guitar magazine.
