Biography
Mark Cudek belongs to both Hesperus and the Baltimore Consort, where he plays an array of period instruments such as the cittern, Renaissance and Baroque guitars, viols, crumhorns, and recorders. His foundational classical studies took place at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He earned top honors in the inaugural Baltimore Chamber Music Competition. Regular appearances with Les Cordes du Roy, the Folger Consort, Western Wind, Piffaro, Pomerium, and Apollo’s Fire have taken him to the Boston Early Music Festival, the Tage Alter Music Festival in Regensburg, the Glasgow International Early Music Festival, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Teatro Nacional in Panama, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and the Kennedy Center. His recorded work appears on the Dorian, Windham Hill, Linn, Greenhays, Golden Apple, and Maggie’s Music labels. Teaching posts have included the College of the Virgin Islands and Towson University in Baltimore. At Johns Hopkins University he directs the Peabody Renaissance Ensemble, and he established and leads the High School Early Music Program at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Beginning in 2000, he formed Duo Encina with vocalist Kristen Toedtman to present Renaissance repertory from France, Spain, and England.
