Biography
Having built a long-standing presence in the experimental American punk and hardcore scene, Mark Deutrom—widely known as Mark D—joined Melvins in 1991. Originally from Texas, he headed to the West Coast in the mid-'80s to pursue composition at the Cal Arts Institute. Once settled in California, the San Francisco Bay Area punk scene drew his energies, leading him to launch the Alchemy Records label and oversee releases by Neurosis, Melvins, RKL, and additional artists. His engineering work ultimately earned the widest attention. From 1990 through 1991 he handled front-of-house sound duties for Melvins, then filled the vacated bass position by powering an Ampeg SVT rig and remaining with the band as bassist for the following five years, the group's most successful period. In that span he recorded Stoner Witch, Stag, and Honky plus countless singles. Mark D exited Melvins in 1998 to launch a solo recording career, issuing his debut album The Silent Treatment in 2001.
