Biography
Mark De Gli Antoni earned his widest recognition as the keyboard sampler in the New York pop outfit Soul Coughing. Long before that band coalesced, however, he had already immersed himself in the downtown milieu alongside future Soul Coughing members Sebastian Steinberg on bass and Yuval Gabay on drums. The three musicians joined forces with singer-guitarist M. Doughty to launch the hip-hop-inflected ensemble in 199?. After relocating from San Francisco to New York in the early 1990s, De Gli Antoni began attracting notice for his electronic compositions and established the experimental collective Rough Assemblage. In the years preceding Soul Coughing’s breakthrough, his engineering assistance appeared on numerous avant-garde releases emerging from several Manhattan studios. He also took part in John Zorn’s Cobra game piece, both in performance and on the resulting live album. For Zorn’s Tzadik imprint he later wrote and produced the 1999 solo outing Horse Tricks, an excursion into experimental electronic music.
