Mark Farner serves as the driving force behind Grand Funk Railroad, the power trio from Flint, Michigan, whose blues-rock style packed with hooks and strong working-class resonance turned the group into favorites on 1970s rock airwaves. He composed and delivered vocals on numerous standout tracks for the band, encompassing original successes such as "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)," "Bad Time," "Footstompin' Music," and "Rock & Roll Soul," along with the chart-topping cover of Little Eva's "The Loco-Motion" and the enduring classic-rock staple "Some Kind of Wonderful," first recorded by the R&B ensemble Soul Brothers Six. Following the 1976 breakup of GFR, Farner launched his own solo path and eventually established a steady presence within Contemporary Christian music, which brought a Dove Award nomination in 1988. He rejoined Grand Funk for a three-year run during the late 1990s, after which he resumed independent work, performing a mix of GFR material and personal songs on the road as Mark Farner's American Band.
