Mark Feehily, previously one half of the leadership in the globally renowned Irish boy band Westlife, launched his independent path three years after the ensemble disbanded in 2012. Born Markus Feehily on May 28, 1980 and raised in the northwest Irish seaport of Sligo, he first discovered his voice through church choir performances and, during adolescence, joined friends Shane Filan and Kian Egan to create the group IOYOU. That act caught the eye of Louis Walsh, Boyzone’s manager, who sought fresh talent for his roster. Walsh offered a contract, adjusted the membership, and thereby established Westlife. The newly formed outfit entered the scene in 1998 and achieved instant prominence. Over the subsequent fourteen-plus years they dominated international charts, embarked on worldwide tours, and moved more than 55 million units. Feehily publicly identified as gay in a 2005 newspaper conversation after prolonged concealment had driven him to seek therapy; contrary to his anxieties, the reaction from the band’s largely female audience proved broadly supportive. Westlife’s 2012 dissolution occurred alongside the end of his engagement, triggering a depressive episode that found expression in the somber debut album Fire, issued under his original name in 2015. Relocating from London back to Sligo to rejoin his family coincided with the start of a new partnership, ushering in a brighter chapter. For his second release, the 2017 holiday collection Christmas, he adopted the shortened name Mark and built awareness by opening for Mariah Carey on her winter U.K. trek.
