Biography
Born in the USA and raised in Rochester, New York, Gage has maintained an unwavering dedication to music throughout his life. From childhood onward he has recounted: ‘I’ve been possessed by music ever since I was a very little kid. I was collecting 45s when I was four or five years old. I had boxes for them, and I would go off to my Grandma’s house and just play records the whole time I was there. So, in a sense, even at that age I was a DJ’. Earnings from waiting tables remained his sole source of income until the early 90s. That situation changed with the underground impact of two 12-inch releases on Plus 8 Records—the Cusp EP and Vapourspace’s ‘Gravitational Arch Of 10’. The latter title arose from a printing error at the pressing plant; it had been meant to read ‘Arch Of Lo’, yet the mistake secured its place in techno lore under the revised name. He subsequently toured under the Vapourspace name, which also identifies his studio, and was promptly offered a multi-album recording contract by ffrr Records. The arrangement coincided with widespread critical acclaim earned during a US tour shared with the Aphex Twin, Moby and Orbital.
