Biography
Mark Geary entered the world in Dublin, Ireland, during 1973 as one of eight siblings raised amid intense political and social turmoil that contributed to the widespread departure of young Irishmen in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He himself joined that wave of emigrants, settling in New York in 1992 at the age of nineteen, where he steadily gained recognition as one of the city’s leading singer-songwriters; local writers placed him in the lineage of candid, introspective artists such as Jeff Buckley and Elliot Smith who had already shaped the music landscape. To substantiate the attention, he put out his self-titled debut album on Paradigm Records early in 1999. Following the example of Beth Orton, Geary weaves fragments of electronica into the open sections and underlying textures of otherwise conventional folk instrumentation and arrangements.
