Biography
Mark Morton serves as lead guitarist for the longstanding American heavy metal outfit Lamb of God while also maintaining a solo career that began with a guest-laden debut album released in 2019. His style, built on blues-infused fiery solos paired with rhythms anchored in heavy grooves, established him among the standout players to emerge from the New Wave of American Heavy Metal scene.
A native of Virginia, he sharpened his technique in the late 1980s as a member of Axis, sharing the stage with future Alabama Thunderpussy guitarist Ryan Lake. Early in the following decade, while studying at Virginia Commonwealth University, he connected with bassist John Campbell and drummer Chris Adler; the three musicians joined forces with guitarist Abe Spear and vocalist Randy Blythe to launch Burn the Priest. The ensemble delivered a self-titled full-length under that name before adopting the Lamb of God moniker in 1999, channeling a potent fusion of metalcore, thrash, punk, sludge, and groove-driven death metal.
Lamb of God proceeded to issue successive high-profile studio albums, attaining major commercial traction through gold-certified releases such as Ashes of the Wake and Sacrament. From 2000 through 2018 the band moved millions of units and collected multiple Grammy nominations while preserving its core sound intact. Morton unveiled his solo debut, Anesthetic, on Spinefarm Records in 2019; the set included appearances by Lamb of God colleague Blythe, Mark Lanegan, Papa Roach’s Jacoby Shaddix, Alter Bridge’s Myles Kennedy, Arch Enemy frontwoman Alissa White-Gluz, and the late Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington. Early in 2020 he followed with the EP Ether, which presented several previously unheard tracks plus covers of the Black Crowes’ “She Talks to Angels” and Pearl Jam’s “Black.”
