Brooklyn-based indie rock outfit Market crafts an unhurried strain of introspective pop defined by melodic contours, bittersweet tones, and a subtle current of unease regarding the surrounding world. Fronted by producer and multi-instrumentalist Nate Mendelsohn, the band favors open, organic textures built from direct melodies, touches of folky jangle, and plainspoken yet emotionally resonant vocal harmonies, while keeping Mendelsohn’s experimental leanings present though understated. Their homemade debut, issued in 2016 as Not Good at Spending Time Alone a.k.a. Cleanliness, captured this blend of domestic warmth and darker undercurrents. By the arrival of their 2022 follow-up, The Consistent Brutal Bullshit Gong, the group had tightened its execution, gained maturity, and begun harnessing studio resources while retaining its disheveled sonic identity.

Mendelsohn encountered most of his future Market collaborators during college, where he performed on saxophone, experimented with avant-garde forms, and cultivated an affinity for indie folk alongside unconventional pop. Once studies concluded, he established himself as a producer and engineer, logging regular hours at Brooklyn’s Figure 8 Recording. At that facility he contributed to sessions for Frankie Cosmos, Sam Evian, Wendy Eisenberg, and numerous other notable indie acts; he also partnered with Katie Von Schleicher—who had previously performed with Purple Mountains and Lady Lamb—to launch Shitty Hits Recording Company, a production venture oriented toward independent artists. As Mendelsohn devoted greater attention to his own songwriting, he launched the project known as Market. At first it remained a studio-only endeavor, with Mendelsohn composing every track and handling the majority of instrumentation on the 2016 debut Not Good at Spending Time Alone a.k.a. Cleanliness, released through his own imprint, Cows at the Edge of the Earth. Rachel Ishikawa supplied vocals, Duncan Standish played drums, and Peter Hartmann contributed guitar and vocals during those sessions; live performances added Sally Decker on keyboards and Stephen Becker on guitars and percussion.

Mendelsohn, Decker, and Becker formed the central trio for Market’s second album, Yuy, which also incorporated instrumental and engineering contributions from Standish plus backing vocals from Katie Von Schleicher. Favorable critical notices and successful concerts drew the attention of Western Vinyl, prompting the respected indie label to sign the band for its third long-player. The resulting 2022 release, The Consistent Brutal Bullshit Gong, expanded the sonic palette and personnel: Mendelsohn handled vocals, guitars, keyboards, reed instruments, and electronics; Stephen Becker covered guitar, bass, keyboards, and vocals; Duncan Standish managed drums, percussion, and vocals; Katie Von Schleicher added guitars, keyboards, and vocals; and Natasha Thweatt performed on keyboards and vocals, while Sally Decker did not participate. Von Schleicher additionally produced the sessions and created the artwork, with the album appearing in late April 2022.
