Biography
Marla Hansen, a violist grounded in classical technique, first gained notice by supporting acts that included Kanye West, Duncan Sheik, Sufjan Stevens, and My Brightest Diamond on Asthmatic Kitty releases. In the early 2000s she shifted focus to presenting her own compositions. The compact, wide-ranging, folk-rooted pieces she wrote echoed Stevens while also aligning with chamber-pop figures such as the Tiny, Jesca Hoop, and Joanna Newsom. Standard Recordings issued her debut EP, Wedding Day, in fall 2007; Stevens contributed to several tracks, most prominently “Shuffle Your Feet.” Guitarist Sebastien Kreuger and bassist Nate Lithgow performed on the recording and continued to accompany Hansen in concert.
