Biography
In 1987 a fleeting UK heavy rock supergroup was formed around guitarist Tony MacAlpine, drummer Tommy Aldridge, vocalist Robert Rock and bassist Rudi Sarzo. Despite the weight of their résumés the results proved underwhelming. Mike Varney produced the lone album, which, apart from Rock’s vocals, would have been interchangeable with the purely instrumental releases of Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker and Greg Howe. Project Driver suffered from a diffuse identity, its tracks thrown off balance by unmistakable echoes of Yngwie Malmsteen and Rainbow. The ensemble folded shortly after the record appeared; Sarzo and Aldridge moved on to Whitesnake, Rock assumed lead vocals in Joshua, and MacAlpine returned to his solo work.
