Known among critics as a "contemporary troubadour," Martin Best captivates audiences through his dynamic renditions of medieval minstrel songs. As a solo vocalist, he has produced more than twenty-four albums, frequently providing his own accompaniment using period guitars and lutes. Among these are individual interpretations, especially those featuring the works of Swedish poet and songwriter Carl Michael Bellman, alongside collaborative efforts by the Martin Best Medieval Ensemble and the Martin Best Consort, both founded by him. Additionally, he has interpreted and documented compositions from the era of Shakespeare, serving as a musician with the Royal Shakespeare Company for more than two decades. The year 1983 brought him the International Edison Award along with Gramophone Magazine's Critics' Award. Across many institutions of higher learning in England and the United States, Best has delivered lectures focused on medieval music.
