Chicago native Marty Grebb entered the world in 1946 amid a household filled with working musicians. Early on he mastered keyboards, guitar, and saxophones, eventually establishing himself as a session player who performed throughout the 1960s and 1970s with the Buckinghams and the Fabulous Rhinestones while also supporting Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield. Session engagements continued in the following decades, linking him with Rosanne Cash, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Willie Nelson, Stevie Nicks, Otis Rush, and Leon Russell. His contributions to Bonnie Raitt and Maria Muldaur projects proved especially noteworthy. On Grebb’s 1999 debut album Smooth Sailin’, Raitt joined fellow guests Taj Mahal and Steve Cropper. He also featured on several Telarc anthologies, including Blues for a Rotten Afternoon, Meet Me Where They Play the Blues, and Telarc’s Got the Blues. Marty Grebb died on January 1, 2020, at the age of 74.
