Biography
Martyrdöd formed as a Swedish quartet in Gothenburg during 2001, blending crust and d-beat punk with influences from extreme and black metal. Vocalist and guitarist Mikael Kjellman, bassist Anton Grönholm, drummer Jens Bäckelin, and guitarist and backing vocalist Pontus Redig made up the original lineup. Anton Grönholm exited soon after, after which several bassists rotated through the position.
Their self-titled debut album appeared in 2003 and was followed by the split-EP We Walk the Line with Sunday Morning Einsteins. Havoc Records issued In Extremis in 2005; the recording drew strong praise across Europe and earned the band support slots on multiple tours. Sekt arrived in 2009 as their first release issued on both sides of the Atlantic.
After headlining shows throughout Europe, Martyrdöd signed with Southern Lord. Paranoia surfaced in 2012 to universal acclaim and introduced a broader sound that incorporated more dynamic guitar leads and harmonic dissonances. Bassist Fredrik Reinedahl, known primarily for his production and engineering work with Sólstafir, Abandon, Burst, and Dimension Zero, among others, joined for the 2014 album Elddop.
