Marvin Stamm built a reputation as a versatile trumpeter grounded in bop, while also logging extensive hours as a session musician across much of his working life. He first picked up the trumpet at age 12 and went on to study at North Texas State University. Between 1961 and 1963 he worked in Stan Kenton’s Mellophonium Orchestra, where he occasionally stepped forward for solos. From 1965 to 1966 he performed with Woody Herman, then earned wider notice during his tenure with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra from 1966 to 1972. The following two decades found him largely occupied with studio dates, though he still appeared with Benny Goodman between 1974 and 1975 and joined George Gruntz’s Concert Jazz Band on tour in 1987. Thereafter he devoted far more energy to jazz performance, a focus well illustrated by his Music Masters recordings.
