Palestinian recording artist Marwan Abado left Beirut for Vienna in his late teens, driven by the political turmoil that gripped Lebanon throughout the 1980s. In the Austrian capital he took up the oud, studying under Iraqi master Asim Chalabi. Formerly a guitarist, he began writing songs there and weaving verses from his homeland into his compositions. Rooted in the Taq'sim tradition, his music favors the performer’s spontaneous impulses over predetermined rhythms. Abado has pursued both solo work and projects with multiple ensembles, appearing on stages worldwide. His earliest solo recording, the 1989 Vienna cassette A Different Commitment (Das Andere Engagement), marked the start of that path. He directs the ensemble Abado & Co. and has recorded with Iranian musician Jooya, Austrian poet Christian Loidl, and Peter Rosmanith. He has also written scores for theater and film.
