Mary Ann Rossoni, though without national prominence, has earned recognition as a singer, songwriter, and acoustic guitarist through her work on the New England folk circuit throughout the 1980s and 1990s. She was born and raised in Johnston, Rhode Island, a working-class community located a few hours from Boston.

During early adulthood she studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and completed a degree in illustration. Music remained her central focus, yet Rossoni regularly accepted freelance illustration assignments while meeting expenses through assorted daytime positions that encompassed waitress, bartender, restaurant manager, and real estate agent. After logging extensive performances across New England in the duos Anonymous and Fuzek/Rossoni, she chose to embark on a solo career in 1995. Her initial solo album, Half Slips And Garters, was recorded in 1996. Downcity appeared four years later.
