Mary MacGregor entered the world in St. Paul, Minnesota, on May 6, 1948. She started piano instruction at six and performed with bands throughout her teenage years. After completing studies at the University of Minnesota, she toured nationally with several acts, which eventually drew notice from Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary. MacGregor soon provided backing vocals for Yarrow on his solo tour dates and appeared on his Love Songs album. Ariola America signed her, resulting in the late-1976 release of her debut single, "Torn Between Two Lovers." That track ascended to the top of both the pop and adult contemporary charts in 1977 and exceeded one million copies sold. Two more singles drawn from the same-titled album, which Yarrow also wrote and produced, entered the charts yet were eclipsed by the title track's dominance. MacGregor issued further albums and notched three additional minor chart singles, among them the number 39 hit "Good Friend" in 1979, before withdrawing from the music industry.
