Mary Martin Stockdale, a pianist working in the new age genre, spent her early years in the rural community of Romeo, Michigan, situated north of Detroit. During her childhood neighbors donated a piano to her household, after which she commenced formal lessons at age five and started composing songs by eleven. While enrolled in high school she appeared in recitals and served as choir accompanist. At eighteen her family relocated to the desert region outside Tucson, Arizona; she then attended the University of Arizona, completing a B.A. in education with a minor in music. She subsequently offered private piano instruction and taught sixth grade for one year before electing to concentrate on music education, prompting a move to Colorado where she ultimately settled in Steamboat Springs. There she joined the faculty of the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School as a private teacher and began writing contemporary instrumental music, an activity that produced her debut album, Portraits on the Piano, released in 1999. That recording attracted favorable notice among new age listeners and led directly to her second collection, Trout Creek Lullaby, which appeared in 2002. Timeless followed in 2004.
