Biography
Working as a composer, pianist, and educator, Maryliz Smith draws upon an array of techniques across her creative and instructional work to maximize creative and musical potential for both herself and her pupils. She steers students toward discovering their own distinctive expressive identity, whether they are interpreting compositions by other writers or developing improvisations, and whether they play piano or additional instruments. Her own output includes piano pieces, organ works, and chamber music, all marked by a deeply personal expressiveness that moves beyond conventional stylistic limits. In place of standard concert settings and formats, she creates programs for wide-ranging audiences that merge performance with spoken exchange, thereby strengthening participants’ capacity to communicate.
