Hailing from the Netherlands, DJ Mason—born Iason Chronis—first developed an interest in the DJ realm during childhood. By his teens he was already performing for friends at parties before advancing into club residencies, most notably at Electronation. Extensive tours soon followed across Asia and Europe, leading to a 2006 breakthrough hit throughout the UK and Continental Europe with the single “Exceeder.” Equally skilled as a violinist, he performed alongside DJ Tiesto. In 2009 he established his own imprint, Animal Language, issuing several double A-side singles such as “Front Row Chemistry” and “The Amsterdam Tapes.” The album They Are Among Us arrived in 2011 and showcased guest appearances by Kurtis Blow, Sway, Sam Sparro, and Roisin Murphy. Zoa followed in 2014, again spotlighting major collaborators including Outkast’s Big Boi. Further momentum built in 2015 when “Fashion Killa (Papapapa)” was released on Island Records and topped the electronic-focused Betaport charts. He formally joined Island’s roster in 2016 and began a collaboration with Azealia Banks. After Banks posted homophobic remarks on Twitter, Mason ended the partnership and instead worked with U.K. grime artists Stefflon Don, who were featured on the “Fashion Killa (Papapapa)” single. Also in 2016 he mixed and compiled the Toolroom Miami Poolside album.
