Mastruz Com Leite

The pioneering electric forró ensemble Mastruz com Leite, which has served as a model for countless subsequent groups, has issued more than 30 albums across its history, several attaining gold or platinum certification, while moving in excess of five million units overall. On average the collective performs sixteen concerts monthly, each drawing roughly ten thousand attendees, and once commanded an audience of eighty thousand at a São João celebration in Caruaru, Pernambuco.

Emanuel Gurgel, proprietor of both a radio network and a record label, electrified the classic forró instrumentation of accordion, triangle, and zabumba, thereby merging regional folk traditions with contemporary pop. At its inception the repertoire blended brega songs rendered in forró style with established forró successes. Gurgel assembled the band in November 1990; its original roster comprised accordionist Zé Wilson, drummers Jean and Marcelo, bassist Bel, and singers Japinha and Tony Silveira, the latter doubling on guitar. Seeking a woman’s voice, Gurgel organized the Best Female Forró Singer contest, which introduced Beth and Kátia Cilene; Beth later exited and was succeeded, after several years, by Beth Nascimento. Early appearances occurred as interludes within sets by Gurgel’s other act, Banda Aquarius, beginning with a debut at Mangueira Clube in Fortaleza, Ceará, before the group embarked on regional touring. The pop-inflected northeastern sound soon prevailed throughout most of Brazil, leaving only Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, and Santa Catarina untouched.

“O Rei do Baralho” became the first widely broadcast success, paving the way for the debut album Arrocha o Nó (Continental), which gained traction through “Eu Preciso de Você,” penned by Niceas Drumont and Cecílio Nena. The follow-up, Só Pra Chamegar (1993), introduced the breakout track “Meu Vaqueiro, Meu Peão.” Also in 1993 the LP Coisa Nossa earned the band’s initial gold certification. Two 1996 releases honored foundational figures: Mastruz com Leite no Forró do Gonzagão, saluting “King of Baião” Luiz Gonzaga, and Mastruz com Leite no Forró do Jackson do Pandeiro, dedicated to the coco master. The 1997 live recording Mastruz com Leite Ao Vivo sold 1,500,000 copies. Mid-1998 saw “Tatuagem,” from the album of the same name, emerge as the most-played song across northeastern Brazil. In 1999 the band appeared in the film Xuxa Requebra.

Of the founding members, only bassist Bel and guitarist-vocalist Tony Silveira remain. The subsequent configuration features vocalists Alberto River, Kátia Cilene, and Bete Nascimento, keyboardist Ednaldo Tapeba, guitarist Rey, bassist Faísca, saxophonist Jorge Nobre, accordionists Zezinho da Paraíba, Chiquinho, and Thiago, backing vocalists Vídia and Adjara, and drummers Artur César and Sinésio, who alternate to sustain the group’s signature five-hour uninterrupted performances.
