Biography
Taken to Madrid in his youth, Romero served there as a choirboy under Hele and Rogier. He later joined the Flemish chapel in Madrid, advancing to choirmaster in 1598 and remaining in the post until retirement. His works introduced the new style to Spain and earned wide admiration. Many pieces have been lost, among them fifteen masses and fifty-three villancicos. Most surviving scores call for continuo; the sacred ones in particular reveal his command of shaping melodic lines within a single voice and assigning the resulting textures to several choirs.
