Matrix occupied a pivotal position within the surging jazz fusion scene that defined the mid-1970s, although the ensemble never received the full measure of acclaim it merited. The group entered the Midwest club circuit in 1974 and maintained steady momentum through their appearance at the 1976 Monterey Jazz Festival. Over the ensuing years of intensive touring, they became regulars on the festival circuit while earning respect from a wide range of peers that included Duke Ellington, Weather Report, and Pat Metheny. The band ultimately disbanded shortly after the start of the 1990s, allowing both their recorded output and their contributions to slip into obscurity. Their fortunes reversed when the musicians reconvened in 2000, resuming live activity on the festival circuit and issuing a reunion album two years afterward.
