Matthew Ryan, an alt-country singer and songwriter reminiscent of Josh Rouse and Ryan Adams, channels his raspy vocals and heartfelt lyrics through a consistent output of gloomy, introspective records. Originating from Chester, Pennsylvania, Ryan drew early influence as a youth from U2, the Replacements, and Leonard Cohen. After relocating to Delaware, he spent multiple years performing in various groups prior to inking a solo deal with A&M Records in 1996. The following year saw the launch of May Day, which evoked Tom Waits and initiated a highly productive phase marked by roughly annual album releases. Following the merger of A&M with Interscope Records, his agreement with the label gradually ended, leading Ryan to move across several imprints—including time with the British One Little Indian Records—until he connected with 00:02:59. In 2008 came Matthew Ryan vs. the Silver State, marking his eleventh album over eleven years.
