Biography
Since emerging at the dawn of the 2000s, New York-based jazz bassist and educator Matthew Rybicki has built a broad and distinguished career. His enduring ties to Lincoln Center complement his role on the faculty at Julliard, his authorship of multiple volumes for Hal Leonard Publications, and his extensive performing résumé alongside Wynton Marsalis, Ernie Watts, and Laurence Hobgood. As a bandleader and composer he issued his sole album to date, the 2009 release Driven.
Cleveland, Ohio, is where Rybicki grew up before pursuing studies at Berklee College of Music and Julliard. After relocating to New York in the early 2000s he immersed himself in the local jazz community, appearing at such storied rooms as Lincoln Center, the Blue Note, and the Village Vanguard while also embarking on international tours that took him to festivals and concert halls in Taiwan, Italy, and Qatar. Work with Hilary Cole, Oscar Perez, Ted Rosenthal, and Renee Fleming eventually prompted his own project, Driven, which arrived in 2009 as his debut recording under his own name and featured pianist Gerald Clayton together with saxophonist Ron Blake.
Throughout the 2010s he remained active on the bandstand yet found time to complete a pair of books for Hal Leonard, Ray Brown: Legendary Jazz Bassist and The Hal Leonard Jazz Bass Method. Teaching commitments likewise continued in multiple settings, among them curriculum development for Jazz at Lincoln Center, specialized workshops at the Whitney and the Guggenheim, and a faculty appointment at his alma mater, Juilliard.
