Biography
The Italian pianist Mattia Ometto drew on his studies across France, Italy, and the United States to shape a personal approach rooted in the traditions of golden-age virtuosity. Aldo Ciccolini, one of his mentors, once characterized him as “one of those artists whose responsibility is to make audiences perceive what real talent is.”
Born in Padua in 1982, Ometto began his formal training at the Venice Conservatory under Anna Barutti. He continued his work with Ciccolini in Paris before studying with the octogenarian American virtuoso Earl Wild in Palm Springs, California. These successive influences have shaped both his interpretive outlook and the geographic range of his engagements, which have taken him across Europe and the United States. His first major appearance occurred in Paris at the Théatre du Rond Point des Champs Elysées. In the U.S. he has appeared at Carnegie Hall as both recitalist and concerto soloist, as well as in Boston, Los Angeles with the Lyric Symphony Orchestra, and Des Moines, Iowa. Additional performances include those at the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice, with the Academic Başkent Orchestra in Ankara, Turkey, and with the Vidin State Philharmonic Orchestra in Vidin, Bulgaria. Radio listeners have encountered him on the BBC, RAI International, Radio della Svizzera Italiana, WGBH in Boston, Iowa State Public Radio, and Kulturradio Berlin, among other outlets.
On the Brilliant label he has recorded an album of Franck: Melodies with soprano Francesca Scaini and, in 2018, a set of Liszt: Symphonic Poems in two-piano arrangements together with Leslie Howard. Ometto serves on the faculties of the J. Tomadini Conservatory in Udine and the C. Pollini Conservatory in Padua, and he has conducted master classes at Drake University in Des Moines, Redlands University, the Accademia della Musica in Padua, and elsewhere.
