Initially working as a secretary, Maureen McGovern landed an assignment from Russ Regan in 1973 to record the main title for the film The Poseidon Adventure, which promptly topped the charts. One year later she delivered the theme song for The Towering Inferno, titled "We May Never Love Like This Again," a track that failed to chart yet captured an Academy Award. Additional motion-picture themes followed before McGovern deliberately stepped away from soundtrack work, making her Broadway debut in The Pirates of Penzance. Over time she cultivated an image as a refined interpreter of pop repertoire, culminating in a Carnegie Hall headlining engagement during the 1990s that showcased both stage scores and classic material by George Gershwin along with fellow composers.
