Formed in Seattle, the mostly female post-grunge outfit Mavis Piggott specialized in hard-rocking material yet never drew widespread public interest. Their style landed between more abrasive acts like Hole and Babes in Toyland on one side and the girlish tone of Veruca Salt on the other. Critics largely met the band with indifference, acknowledging competent execution while noting an absence of standout qualities. Guitarist and vocalist Meghan Adkins partnered with drummer Nicole "Nicky" Thomas to establish Mavis Piggott; Thomas had previously performed in the all-female Dischord band the Fire Party before leaving Washington, D.C., for the West Coast. Bassist John Wickhart, formerly of the recently defunct Hush Harbor, joined the lineup, after which the group signed to Flydaddy and released the 1995 EP Late Bloom. Their first full-length, You Can Be Low, followed in 1996 and attracted little notice. The 1999 album In a Dark Suit earned modestly increased coverage yet still failed to broaden their audience, leading to the band’s quiet dissolution.
