Maximillian Colby

Emerging from the East Coast hardcore tradition, the unfortunately little-known Maximillian Colby stood at the leading edge of post-punk. Comparable to Jawbox, the group fused raucous intensity with melancholic melodies, attaining cult status among a devoted handful of listeners.

The band formed on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, during the early 1990s. Dave Nesmith and Drew Ringo covered guitar and vocals, Bob Baynor handled bass and vocals, and Tom Richards played drums. Their initial 7" for Washington D.C.’s Nervous Wreck Kids introduced the hallmarks of their style—elaborate song structures and an absence of restrictions. They placed two tracks on Whirled Records compilations, then issued their obscure yet revered split 12" with the Canadian band Shotmaker.

In 1995 the group ended abruptly with Bob Baynor’s sudden death. Nesmith and Ringo later launched Sleepytime Trio with Ben Davis and Jonathan Fuller.
