Biography
The husband-and-wife duo Maya & Sage comprises vocalist Maya alongside multi-instrumentalist Sage Knowles. Their first album, Spirit of Love, appeared in 2004 under the subtitle "Devotional Chanting & Spiritual Love Songs." Maya Knowles spent her early years in Rochester, MI, where singing entered her life during childhood. Piano study began at seven, followed by a switch to guitar at 14. She earned honors at Michigan State University in music composition and later completed a doctorate in communication. She co-wrote Rethinking Classroom Management and maintained a long career as a schoolteacher. Chanting entered her practice after a move to California, where she issued the solo recording Comin' Home.
Sage Knowles was raised on a ranch in Barstow, CA, taking up piano, trumpet, and guitar during childhood. Local bands occupied his early performing years until an interest in meditation led him to the "spiritual dance band" Namasté. An earlier release, Entering Devachan, came out with Amrita Cottrell. Shortly after their introduction, Maya and Sage started harmonizing, soon moving to joint performances. Marriage followed a year later, by which point work on Spirit of Love had already begun.
