While studying at York University in Toronto, Maybrick assembled with influences stretching from British pop to heavy metal. The year 1996 found them writing original material and securing their own Toronto-area shows, including a debut performance at the landmark El Mocambo. Studio work on a first album began in 1997. White Noise arrived in 1998 and received strong notice on local and college circuits, leading to opening slots for Swervedriver and Slowburn as the band’s popularity grew. Founding member Kristin Maling then exited to focus on graphic design, and Dan Mathers joined in her place. Following a series of injuries and other setbacks in 1999, the group turned in earnest to a second album. They returned to the studio in 2001, issuing Breakuptheband in May 2002. Festival and industry showcases such as Canada Music Week and North by Northeast Festival followed, along with performances throughout Ontario and additional parts of Canada.
