Biography
Born as Mayfred Nutter Adamson in Jane Lew, West Virginia, Mayf Nutter grew up in a household of local musicians and first reached radio listeners at age twelve. After college he settled in Atlanta during the mid-1960s and made his earliest recordings there. Relocating to California in the late 1960s following the release of several tracks, he scored his initial chart entry in 1970 with the Johnny Cash tribute “Hey There Johnny,” which reached the Top 70. Over the following two years he placed four additional mid-chart singles, among them “The Sing-Along Song” (1972) and “Green Door” (1973). In the early 1970s he appeared fifty-six times on Buck Owens’ TV Ranch, guest-starred on series such as The Waltons, Falcon Crest, and The Fall Guy, and supplied narration for several Disney films. Midway through the decade he logged minor successes with “Sweet Southern Lovin’” and “Goin’ Skinny Dippin’.” He returned periodically to the East Coast for the Wheeling Jamboree’s “Jamboree in the Hills” and wrote the event’s theme song in 1978. In 1982 he became the first American country performer to appear on Chinese television; shortly afterward he stepped away from recording and performing to focus on other professional pursuits.
