Biography
Following the 1996 breakup of the noise and experimental outfit Gorp, its frontman Christian Anderson Smith found himself working as a busboy while the remaining members launched Golden Lake Diner. Several months afterward he continued in that same role yet had simultaneously launched the solo project Mayor McCA, an eclectic folk one-man band. Described as a strange yet fascinating hybrid of Ron Sexsmith and Tiny Tim, McCA handles guitar, harmonica, kazoo, bontempi, bass drum, maracas, and ukelele while also employing a “shoe tambourine,” a tambourine fastened to the sole of his shoe. An independently issued cassette titled Demolition attracted the attention of Sonic Unyon, which put out the aptly named Busboy CD in 1997. The follow-up album Welcome to McCALand appeared in May 1999.
