Biography
Mayumi Itsuwa, the Japanese singer-songwriter and keyboardist, built her reputation as a pop vocalist through expansive torch songs and a penetrating vibrato. She stepped onto the scene in 1972 with the album Shojo, then spent the following decade cultivating a broad audience throughout Asia, capped by the chart-topping single “Koibito yo” that anchored her identically titled 1980 release. Strong sales continued into the 1990s, cementing her status as a revered presence in Japanese popular music.
Born in 1951 and raised in Tokyo, the performer tracked her debut album in Los Angeles with producer John Fischbach and supporting musicians David Campbell, Carole King, and Charles Larkey. Shojo climbed to number six on the Japanese charts, and her initial releases remained fixtures inside the Top 40 for the rest of the decade. The 1980 project Koibito yo supplied her first number-one placement; the title track drove both single and album to strong showings beyond Japan and secured her highest-ever chart ranking. The album held the top Japanese position for three straight weeks and received the “Gold Prize” at the 1980 Japan Record Awards. Follow-up titles such as Shunshu, Marionette, and Shiosai also reached the Top Ten, while multiple compilations appeared between studio efforts.
Itsuwa sustained a steady output through the 1990s and into the new century, returning to the upper chart tiers with Welcome in 2007 and the Mayumi Itsuwa 40th Anniversary Best Album [Lovers & Friends] in 2013. In 2022 she marked the fiftieth anniversary of her debut by issuing Mayumi Itsuwa Premium Best HISTORY.
