Biography
Mbilia Bel's professional ascent gained momentum during the mid-1980s through her vocal partnerships with Tabu Ley across multiple recordings and live performances, all while she simultaneously issued her own solo albums. Following the birth of her first child, she paused her activities and chose to end her association with Ley after completing one final joint album together in 1987. She relocated to Paris, where she collaborated with guitarist Rigo Star on the composition and arrangement of much of her subsequent work. The predominant focus of her songwriting centers on adult romantic relationships, a thematic emphasis that has sparked controversy in certain contexts. Between 1989 and 1990 she performed across the U.S., U.K., and West Africa to consistently receptive audiences. In more recent years she has explored modifications to the established rumba/soukous structure by incorporating rap and additional influences, yielding uneven outcomes.
