Born Eric Martin on 19 August 1970 in Cardiff, Wales, MC Eric—also known as Me One—traces Jamaican ancestry yet was raised in Wales as the youngest of twelve siblings. Entry into Technotronic, arranged by his girlfriend Ya Kid K, first placed him before television audiences and on turntables, most visibly through the recurring “This Is Technotronic” hook and his trademark skyscraper hairstyle in the clip. He later recalled the experience by stating, “I was 18 and Ya Kid K was 17 when we came into Technotronic and we knew that the money wasn’t good.” Additional contributions extended to recordings by artists ranging from Madonna to Jazzy Jeff. His initial solo album, led by the single “Jealous,” achieved artistic recognition through understated melodic layers anchored by piano figures and rolling bass. Public presence diminished once the project appeared. After the birth of his son Eric Jnr with Ya Kid K, he resumed activity with the excellent As Far As I’m Concerned issued under the Me One name.
