Biography
Born Michael Berrin, MC Serch earned acclaim as one of the foremost white rappers in the genre. He formed one-third of the group 3rd Bass alongside Pete Nice and DJ Richie Rich. The trio issued two studio albums plus a collection of remixes, all before Serch launched his solo career in 1992 with Return of the Product on Def Jam, the same label that had hosted the 3rd Bass projects. From that album came a single extending Main Source's "Back to the Grill," which included a guest spot from Nas and reached the pinnacle of the Billboard rap chart. Serch further advanced Nas's early career by selecting "Halftime" for the Zebrahead soundtrack and contributing to Illmatic, serving as executive producer on both. After stepping back from performing, Serch operated a promotions company and hosted radio shows. In 2002 he assumed the morning slot on WJLB in Detroit, marking the first time since Casey Kasem in the 1950s that a non-Black DJ held that position at the station.
