Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, rapper McKinley Dixon crafts intricate poetic stories over richly arranged orchestral backings. His introspective verses probe trauma and heartbreak connected to the Black experience in American society, conveying messages of growth, knowledge, pride, and celebration. He started issuing music in the mid-2010s and first drew wider attention with his third album, the 2021 release For My Mama and Anyone Who Look Like Her. The Toni Morrison-inspired Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? surfaced in 2023 and earned broad critical praise.

Born in Annapolis, Maryland, McKinley Dixon spent his early years there and in Jamaica, Queens. Deeply shaped by the writings of Nobel Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison, the innovative hip-hop of OutKast, and the theatrical rock of bands such as My Chemical Romance, he began creating music during his college years in Richmond, Virginia. His debut album, 2016's Who Taught You to Hate Yourself?, addressed topics including faith, police brutality, and internalized racism, with guest appearances by Guilty Simpson, the late Sean Price, and Dr. Cornel West. The follow-up arrived in 2018 as The Importance of Self Belief, an empowering set that expanded the use of jazzy live instrumentation. "Anansi, Anansi" emerged as a standalone single on Saddle Creek in 2019, after which Dixon issued the EP The House That Got Knocked Down in 2020.

Considered the closing entry in a trilogy, For My Mama and Anyone Who Look Like Her was released by Spacebomb Records in 2021. Dixon contributed a guest verse to Diaspora Problems, the acclaimed 2022 album from hardcore punk outfit Soul Glo. Next appearing on City Slang, he issued Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? in 2023, its title drawn from three Toni Morrison novels. Advancing his work to a heightened level of sophistication, the album included contributions from Anjimile, Angélica Garcia, and Ghais Guevara.
