Biography
In 2023 LaToya Kent and RA Washington, the founding members of Mourning [A] BLKstar, stepped away from their Cleveland-rooted ensemble to introduce the Me:You project and its album Field Tapes in der Trash, a work that shifts between seductive and confrontational moods. The recording merges soul, jazz, blues, funk, rock, and dub within an avant-garde post-punk framework, reducing the collective’s layered group approach to Kent’s straightforward poetic voice and Washington’s propulsive rhythmic constructions built from samples, loops, programming, and live instrumentation. American Dreams released Field Tapes in der Trash in April 2023 with only Jah Nada and Laura B. appearing as additional musicians, arriving a couple of months after Algiers issued their Kent-assisted album Shook.
