Biography
A partnership unites the Eastern Algonquin powwow ensemble Eastern Medicine Singers with experimental rock guitarist and producer Yonatan Gat, yielding Medicine Singers, a project that merges avant-jazz, edgy post-punk, and electronic textures alongside powwow drums and vocals. What began as an impromptu onstage meeting evolved into an avant-garde supergroup, drawing contributions from leading voices across experimental jazz, ambient music, and additional outsider styles for the self-titled 2022 debut album.
The story traces back to South by Southwest in 2017, where Gat watched Eastern Medicine Singers from the audience. He invited group leader Daryl Black Eagle Jamieson to share his own stage that evening, a gesture that eventually prompted a full recording collaboration. Momentum brought in trumpeter Jaimie Branch, ambient pioneer Laraaji, Swans members Thor Harris and Christopher Pravdica, plus additional participants whose input shaped the boundary-crossing sound of Medicine Singers. The album appeared in September 2022 via the Stone Tapes label in partnership with Joyful Noise.
