Meira Asher, an Israeli vocalist, has gained recognition through her bold protest songs addressing topics like incest and politics in the Middle East, frequently merging ancient musical traditions and religious texts with modern arrangements. After training in percussion and dance across Ghana and the Ivory Coast, she applied her skills to music therapy sessions with autistic children while also instructing percussion courses at multiple Israeli academic institutions. The 1997 release Dissected marked her initial foray as a self-produced artist, showcasing her distinctive approach and themes in a manner that paved the way for subsequent work. Two years afterward came Spears Into Hooks, an album that zeroed in on the Israel/Palestine conflict with heightened intensity, shedding elements of world music from her prior record to forge an electronic opera blending spoken word, chants, and sharp-edged sounds.
