Biography
Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and Juno Award recipient Melanie Doane issued her debut full-length album, Shakespearean Fish, on the Sony label in 1996. Early critical notices hailed the arrival of a distinctive new voice and forecast a string of equally strong releases ahead.
Nova Scotia-born Doane grew up surrounded by music in a home where her father taught the subject and her siblings absorbed the sounds of Queen, Crowded House, and the Pretenders. Her mother also insisted that each child study at least one instrument, prompting Doane to achieve proficiency on piano, bass, mandolin, and violin even though many of her guitar-driven songs and album images suggest a primary affinity for that instrument.
In 1995 she took an independent route by recording and releasing a self-titled EP. The songs quickly reached receptive ears at Sony Music Canada, resulting in a contract and the subsequent creation of her first major-label album. Her second album, Adam’s Rib, appeared in 1998, the same year she received the Juno Award for Best New Artist. Beyond her own projects, Doane works as a session musician for numerous prominent Canadian acts, and her brother, drummer Creighton Doane, has both performed on her recordings and co-written material with her.
Among the songs listeners can find on her albums are “The Space Between Us,” “Absolutely Happy,” “Waiting for the Tide,” “Happy Homemaker,” and “There Is No Beautiful.”
